Obituary

James “Jim” Charles Lawrence, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at home in Leavenworth, Kansas, surrounded by his family. He was 65.
He was born on June 6, 1960, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the third of seven children of James and Betty Jo (Cunningham) Lawrence.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1979 and proudly served his country for 30 years, with several tours in Korea and Germany. He fought in the Battle of 73 Easting with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Gulf War. He loved the Army and was a dedicated, highly decorated Soldier who excelled as a Cavalry Scout and an experienced leader. He rose through the ranks and ultimately achieved the highest enlisted rank of Command Sergeant Major. Like many who serve in combat, Jim carried the lasting effects of his service and sacrifices long after he came home.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, exploring, woodworking, watching the Weather Channel, and old westerns. Above all, he valued time and connection with his family and believed that family extended beyond biology and blood. Jim cherished his blended family and all the love it brought into his life.
Jim is survived by his three children, Tabitha Croy of Arlington, Virginia; James Lawrence along with his fiancé Kasey Cortner of Lansing, Kansas; and Grace Lawrence of Alexandria, Virginia. His blended family includes Jessicia Lawrence; beloved grandchildren Tobias, Arianna, Jay, Alexis, Kaydie, Christian, Ky, and Nevaeh; two great-grandchildren, Toni and Silas; and siblings Keith, Vicky, Mike, Robin, and David.
Jim is also survived by his former wife, the mother of his children and lifelong friend, Cheryl Lawrence. Her loving care and presence through his final days brought strength and comfort to him and to all of us.
He will be deeply missed, and we are comforted in knowing he felt our love and support. We will continue to honor Jim and carry his love with us for the rest of our lives.
