Obituary

Jack Chapman
1928-2009

Jack Chapman, 81, Jamesport, MO, died Friday, July 3, 2009 at University of Kansas Medical Center.
Jack was a man of science and a man of compassion. He will be missed by his close family and friends and inadvertently by the many students whose lives he touched with his knowledge, character and humor in the classroom.
Jack Chapman was born February 11, 1928 to Alta and Lillian Chapman in Ada, Oklahoma. He was one of eight children. Siblings surviving are Billie "Day" Nordahl, Nevada, Wanda "Donnie" Chapman, Lillian "Tinker" Martin and Lucretia Scoffield, all of Oklahoma.
Jack attended Byng Schools, graduating in 1946. He enlisted in the Army, serving in Korea as a clerk typist with the 24th Quarter Masters Corp. He returned to Ada, married Elizabeth Mathews and had a family.
He worked for Wapple Platter Wholesale Grocers, in the Price Marion Tool Company oil fields, and for Mayflower Moving Company.
He took pleasure in owning his own Stinson Luscumb aircraft and diesel truck.
Jack then decided to further his education by pursuing a teaching degree. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 and a Masters Degree in Education in 1970 from East Central State College, Ada, Oklahoma. His first teaching job was in Orlando, OK.
He and his family moved to Atchison, Kansas in 1969 where Jack taught several science courses at Atchison High School. He preferred chemistry and physics and later taught both at the college level at Highland Community College.
Jack earned his Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Kansas in 1980 and attended the University of Wisconsin and Kansas State University as well. He retired from teaching in 1992.
Jack married Darla McCubbin on July 3, 1993. They have a daughter, Maryl, 14 years old. Before suffering a stroke in the fall of 2006, Jack's many hobbies and interests kept him busy. Those included writing poetry, reading, photography, restoration of and driving foreign automobiles, home remodeling and construction, woodworking, spending time drinking coffee with friends, and visits with his children and their families.
Jack is survived by his wife, Darla; sons, Randall, Virginia and Greg, Colorado; daughters, Debbie (Larry), Arkansas, Dana (Milton), Gladstone, MO, Raquel, Atchison, Kansas and Maryl; 11 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a great grandson, expected in October; in-laws, Mary and Jim McCubbin, Pam and Nicole Schwartz, Ginny and Mark Bailey, and Julie McCubbin, all of Atchison, Kansas.
A gathering of remembrance of Jack's life will be held 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Friday, July 17th, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, the Family suggests memorial donations to the International Essential Tremor Foundation (www.essentialtremor.org), the University of Kansas Medical Center, or the Humane Society of Atchison, Kansas. Condolences may be sent to the home address at 703 West Auberry Grove, Jamesport, MO 64648 or d_jchapman@yahoo.com.
Mr. Chapman was a member of the Missouri Cremation Society.
