Eleanor Martha Lane Kerns, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Living Communities care facility.
Mrs. Kerns was born June 10, 1933, in Charter Oak, Iowa to Herman O. A. and Mary Maine (Myles) Maas, who both preceded her in death. She married Darrell L. Kerns on October 11, 1953 in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home in St. Joseph after Darrell finished his military term in 1955. They both retired from Wheeling Disposal Service Inc. in 1998.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Alvina Koepke Hansen Purchase, Viola Koepke, Edna Mae Maas, and Augusta Sophie Haines; and a brother, Alvin Koepke.
(Survivors:) her husband of the home; son, Junior D. Kerns and wife, Bonnie, Las Cruces, NM; daughter, Susan M. Steeby and husband, Caryl, St. Joseph; brother, Albert L. Maas and wife, Yvonne, Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Laura Steeby Robins and husband, Rad, Provo, UT, Brenda E. Steeby and David O. Steeby both of St. Joseph; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eleanor will be cremated under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. No funeral service will be held at Eleanor's request, a family graveside service at the Kerns Freeman Cemetery, Hemple, MO will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Three Rivers Hospice, 2335 n. Belt, Ste E North, St. Joseph, MO 64506 or to Kerns Freeman Cemetery, C/O Darrell Kerns at the home address.
