Doris Jean Carter, age 83, of Hardin, MO passed away at Shirkey's Nursing Home on Monday, February 22, 2016.

Doris was born February 5, 1933, in Lexington, MO to Otto and Esther (Coen) Hackley. Doris attended Lexington Public Schools graduating in 1950.

On June 18, 1950, Doris married Francis Carter. During their 62 years of marriage, they were blessed with 6 children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Doris found great joy in spending most of her working years as a homemaker and volunteer. She delighted in her family and served the Hardin community as a member of the Garden Club, a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA officer and other community service organizations.

Doris is survived by George Carter (son) of Wichita, KS and children Christopher and Jan Carter of Wichita, KS and Seth Carter of Wichita, KS; Gary (son) and Dianne Carter of Licking, MO and children Nathan Carter of Mexico, MO, Cory and Sara Carter of Mexico, MO, and Jennifer Carter of Mexico, MO; David (son) and Teresa Carter of Williamsburg, VA and children Chad and Dina Carter of Chesapeake, VA and Melissa and Brad Foster of Virginia Beach, VA; Jeff (son) and Beth Carter of St. Louis, MO and children, Ross and Amanda Carter of San Antonio, TX, Anne and Austin Caverly of Manhattan, KS, and Ruth and Bruce of the home. Other survivors include sisters Dixie Hyskell of Elizabethton, Tennessee and; Bessie Hoeflicker of Higginsville, MO; 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by: husband Francis Carter; two children, Fonda Jean Carter (daughter) and Francis Nolan Carter (son); her parents, Otto and Esther Hackley; sister Lola Seek and brother Otto Nolan Hackley Jr.

Doris was a long standing member of the Hardin United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Lay Leader, Lay Member of Missouri United Methodist Annual Conference, Certified Lay Speaker, Church Treasurer and Sponsor for United Methodist Youth Fellowship activities. She was also active with United Methodist Women at the local, district and conference levels. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, 3:00 PM at the Hardin United Methodist Church.
