Doris Henry Hill Willhite
1922-2006
Doris Henry Hill Willhite died at home early Thursday morning, November 16,
2006. She died in her sleep after a brief struggle with cancer. She was
born April 28, 1922 in Great Bend, Kansas; her parents were Edith Marie
Cress Hill and Carl Graham Hill.
Doris Henry Hill attended Benton and Ladd Elementary Schools, and graduated
As valedictorian of Central Senior High School, Kansas City, Missouri, in
1939. She graduated from William Woods College, Fulton, Missouri, also as
Valedictorian. In 1943 she received her B.A. from the old University of
Kansas City, predecessor of U.M.K.C., where she also did extensive graduate
work.
Doris Henry Hill worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as a claims
supervisor during World War II. She married Franklin C. Willhite in 1946.
They lived for two years in Chicago during his attendance at the University
Of Chicago, and then returned to Kansas City, Missouri. Daughters Laura
Edith and Leslie Cooper were born in 1948 and 1952.
In 1957 Mrs. Willhite began teaching at Douglass School, one of the first
integrated schools in Kansas City. She taught upper grades there, as well
as at Swinney and Longfellow, and retired in 1985 after thirty years of
service.
Mrs. Willhite loved her several homes inside and out, and devoted herself to their beauty. She was also a collector and reader of books. She was proud
of her children whom she regarded as intelligent, hard-working, loving and
of good character. She regarded them and her former students as her
principal accomplishment in life.
