1918-2006
Clara Puckett Winston, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at the Fountains at Corby Place.
Clara was born on October 4, 1918, in Tifton, Georgia. She earned an A.B. from Wesleyan College and a Bachelor's of Music from Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon, Georgia. She also did post-graduate work at Juilliard School of Music in New York City. When she married Richard Kinnebrew Winston in June 1940, Clara was only a few credits away from completing a Master's degree in music.
The Winston family of three daughters and two sons moved to Valdosta, Georgia in 1953, where Clara and Dick lived for 46 years. During this time Clara shared her musical gifts by accompanying the choir at the First United Methodist Church and actively volunteered with the Lowndes-Valdosta Arts Council. After the death of her husband, September 1998, Clara moved to St. Joseph in 1999, to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Wally McDonald.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ralph Atticus Puckett and Clara Stedman Puckett; her husband, Richard Kinnebrew Winston; a brother, Thomas S. Puckett, and a son, John Paul Winston.
Survivors include a brother, Col. Ralph Puckett (US Army ret.) of Columbus, Georgia; daughters Lane Winston Smith, Valdosta, Peggy Winston McDonald, St. Joseph, Elizabeth (Libba)Winston, Tampa, Florida; and a son, Richard Winston, Jr., Leesburg, Georgia; grandsons, Briggs Jr. and Richard Winston Smith and Louis Jamison McDonald; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lane McDonald and Clara Elizabeth Winston; great-grandsons, Mason William and Logan Richard McDonald and Richard Winston Smith, Jr. and Henry Gray Smith; great-granddaughters, Lane Mason and Ellis Smith and Leah Katheryn McDonald.
(Memorial Service:) 1:30 p.m. Friday, The Fountains at Corby Place. Private Family Inurnment January 4, 2007, followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church, Valdosta, Georgia. Mrs. Winston was a member of Missouri Cremation Services. The Family suggests memorial gifts to Aseracare Hospice, St. Joseph, First United Methodist Church, Valdosta, Georgia, or the charity of the donor's choice.
